I am descended through the Glymphs by my grandmother. The family originated somewhere in Germany, possibly Lunenburg, with Johann Abraham Glymph, born about 1726. His father was Solomon Glymph, a teacher. Nothing else is known about Solomon.
Johann was married at least three times, first to Elisabeth (in New York), secondly to Janche Quick, a Dutchwoman (in New York), and thirdly Catherine [Planter?] (in South Carolina). Johann was in New York no longer than ten years, and lived the rest of his life in South Carolina.
It has taken me, so far, about 3-4 years to compile this information. Many thanks goes to researchers on the Internet (such as GenForum, Ancestry, and more), web sites, my local library, and many other resources.

1. JOHANN ABRAHAM2 GLYMPH (SOLOMON1)1 was born Abt. 1726 in Prussia, Germany1, and died Abt. 1780 in South Carolina2. He married CATHERINE [PLANTER?]3,4. She was born 1754 in Newberry County, South Carolina5, and died December 6, 18226.

Could have had a son John Jr. who married Janche Quick and had a son who was born in NY in 1764.

 

Johann Abraham Glimpff arrived 13 December 1754 on the Ship Neptune at Philadelphia (Daniel Rupp, "A Collection of upwards of Thirty Thousand NamesImmigrants in Pennsylvania from 1727 to 1776," page 348).

Johann Abraham Glymph moved to SC and in 1769 received a grant of 100 acres in Berkeley County. In 1770, he sold this tract with dower signed by wife, Catherine. After death of Johann Abraham Glymph, Catherine married 2) John Heller; married 3) Christian Ruff; and married 4) John Lowe (Sandra Lee, Newberry Equities, p. 243).

This may have no validity in fact, but Johann could have been a Polish Jew. Another descendant of Johann Abraham Glymph, whose name is Jimmy Hill, states on GenForum that "Back in the 1970s, one of my great aunts found the records in the National Archives concerning Johann Abraham Glymph's arrival in Philadelphia aboard the 'Neptune.' If I remember correctly the Neptune's voyage originated in Amsterdam, Holland.

Next to Johann's name was some sort of funny script. No one in our batch of Texas Glimps had any idea what the script might be. My mom and I guess that it might be Hebrew, so we took it to the local Conservative Jewish rabbi in Waco, Texas. He called us back and said he wanted to welcome his 'long lost Jewish cousins.' He said that the Hebrew script read 'John, son of Sol(omon), a Scholar.'

My guess is Johann Abraham (notice the name Abraham - very Jewish) may have been a Polish Jew in one of the areas of Poland occupied by the Prussians (Germans) of King Frederick the Great. Rather than live under Prussian oppression, he lit out to the Netherlands, then America. My guess on Poland as an origin is because Glemp is a Polish name. The current Roman Catholic primate of Poland and archbishop of Warsaw is Joseph Cardinal Glemp. It's not too far a stretch to guess that the Cardinal's ancestors converted (or were forced to convert) to Catholicism and stayed in Poland while Johann Abraham Glymph had enough of the Prussians, Russians, Swedes, and Austrians. Instead of putting up with their pogroms and oppression, he headed to the freedom of Holland and then the British Colonies."

Quoting Janet Bouton on the Glymph GenForum, Johann Abraham "came to America from Amsterdam, Holland. Family tradition says that he was killed by Tories in North or South Carolina. His service in the Revolutionary War says that he was 'born in Germany, was 40 years old in 1788 (thus placing his birth date around 1748-1750), 5 ft. 4 1/2 inches, tall, black hair, fair complexion." Her information came from the book "History of Lauderdale County."

John Glymph, born before 1774, died 3 January 1807, married Elizabeth Rikard, died 1829, daughter of John Reichert and wife, Catherine. John Glymph had a large estate near the Broad River. In 1805, he was among trustees for Salem Methodist Church on Second Creek (Newberry Deeds H-167). (Dutch Fork Genealogy Site)

Plat shews irregularly shaped tract bounded by Buchanan's Estate, Yarborough, Zach'h Hogg, John Suber, Lominnick, John Keller, and Gaspar Wecker. The resurvey found 604 acres. The widow Elizabeth received 190 acres as her full third; John Glymph, younger son of deceased, received 90 acres; Fatsey Glymph, eldor daughter, received 100 acres, and Lemuel Glymph, elder son, received 124 acres. (The remaining 100 acres presumably went to Mary Glymph. Note that the children's property was divided according to value, not according to acreage.)

Horry County Census S.C. 1850 family #125 James Blackwell age 30; Sara G. Blackwell age 22; Levi Blackwell age 6; Edith Blackwell age 4 and Meranzey Blackwell age 1. Meranzey died at age about 75, No Physician was on hand at death . Death Certificate # 10-209 Columbus Co. N.C. Died Of supposed Heart Dropsy. According to Death Certificate, she was born in the Cirro Gordo section of Columbus County N.C. but she was also in the 1850 census of Horry County S.C. so the Death Certificate is possibly wrong about place of birth. Also James Blackwell was born in Ga. so that is wrong too.
