The Cromers' Hometown: Erpfingen, Swabian Alb, Germany-

erpfingen.jpg

<< This is  photo of the Kromers' hometown in Germany, Erpfingen. Erpingen is located in southern Germany, in Baden-Wurttenburg, in the Swabian Alb. As you can see it's a very small town. It's not far from Munich, Augsburg, Albstadt, Basel, and Empfingen, Germany; Contrexeville, France; and Zurich, Switzerland.
The village Erpfingen was first documented in 777, and is a very old town. Finds occupy this town from the time between 400 BC and 100 AD. During Medieval Times, a powerful castle stood over the future town of Erpfingen. In the 1900s, Erpfingen, which was characterized predominantly by the large poverty of its inhabitants. It became a tourist place in 1949 when a bear cave was discovered. Erpfingen also hosts the Ostereiermuseum, where artful verzierte bird eggs from all over the world are issued.

I am descended from the Cromers in two ways (perhaps more!), both originating to John George and Christina Cromer, who were from Germany. John George Cromer died before October 1, 1768, in Newberry County, South Carolina. I am descended from their son, Martin Cromer, born after 1752 in South Carolina, married Mary, and died November 6, 1823. Martin and Mary Cromer's two sons are both my ancestors, John George Cromer (II) and David Cromer. John George Cromer II was my 4x-grandfather and David Cromer was my 4x-grandfather. John George's 2x-grandson, Dewey Glymph, and David Cromer's 2x-granddaughter, Ollie DeHihns, were married in 1920. Newberry families intermarried a lot.

Dewey's grandmother was Lena Ellen Gilliam (1870-1947), daughter of John William Gilliam and Eugenia Emaline (Cromer) Gilliam. Eugenia, sometimes called Emeline, was an only child, the daughter of Stephen and Martha Emaline (Adams) Cromer. Thirty-four year old Stephen was killed during the War of Northern Aggression (also known as the War Between the States) at the Battle of Second Manassas, Virginia, on August 30, 1862, leaving a 33-year-old widow and their 11-year-old daughter, about a week short of her 12th birthday back in Newberry, South Carolina.
Stephen, born around 1828, was one of five children of John George Cromer (II) and Nancy Lake Cromer. He had four brothers: Whitfield, Uriah, Langston, and Miles.

Ollie DeHihns' grandmother, Epsie Melinda Felker, was a daughter of Peter and Delilah (Cromer) Felker. Delilah (1815-1870) was a daughter of David Cromer (1790-) and Elizabeth Wicker Cromer. David Cromer, born in 1790, was a brother to John George Cromer (II). They were both sons of Martin and Mary Cromer.
