My great-grandmother, Audrey, was a Snipes, and married Sloan Goldsmith, a grandson of James and Sarah Ellen (Woodside) Goldsmith. She was descended from a long line of Snipes, originally from Virginia, having come over to Virginia from England sometime during the colonial era, or perhaps even before. On her mother's side, she was descended from the Willinghams and Kays. I have traced the Willinghams back only to her great-great grandfather; however, I have traced the Kays back to Bury, England, in the early 1600s.
Audrey's grandfather, Elbert Monroe Snipes, married four times. His second wife and my ancestor, Mary Eliza McGukin, was from Ireland. A story exists that her family came directly from Ireland to Charleston, SC when she was still a child. While on board, her mother (who would have been Mary Drake), died and was buried in a cemetery in Charleston. However, this story (if the facts serve us correctly) couldn't be true, as Eliza's mother died in Anderson in 1885. But, Eliza's grandfather, Hugh McGukin, immigrated from Ireland and the story may have been mixed up and therefore, should apply to him.
Elbert Monroe's mother, Unity (Holder) Snipes, was born in Johnston County, NC between 1803-1809. Her father was Josiah Tenope Holder of North Carolina, and nothing else is known about him. He may have been Irish or even Native American (Tenope?). Unity's mother, Josiah's wife, was Mildred Holliman. Unity had 3 sisters: Willie, Celia, and Mourning; and a brother, Josiah, who moved to Grainger County, Tennessee and had several children (including Milly, who married Unity's son Elbert Monroe Snipes) and an illegitimate child, Elizabeth Hixon, in 1857, shortly after the birth of his wife's child, Elbert (and needless to say, their last child together).
After her father remarried after her mother's death, Audrey and her sisters would hop the train from Pelzer, SC and ride for about 8 miles until they reached their Willingham grandparents' house near the crossroads, where Elijah and Nancy Jeanette (Kay) Willingham lived. The house still stands today.

*As you can see, the Kay family (an English family) kept records as far back to at least 1610. On the other hand, the Willinghams (a Scottish family) didn't keep as many written records. The same holds true with the Teat family, an Irish family, with whom I've had much trouble tracing back past the early-to-mid 1800s.

Elbert's brothers were born in North Carolina.

Elbert was a Sergeant Major in the Confederate Army, Co. K, 37th Regt,Tennessee Infantry, Grainger County, Tenn. He distinguished himselfin the Battle of Murphreesboro, Tenn. (December 31, 1862) and theBattle of Lookout Mt., Tenn. He was captured by the Union Army nearNashville, Tenn. on December 16, 1864. He was in the Union prison inLouisville, KY and was transferred to Camp Douglas, Illinois onDecember 21, 1864.
